What are gabion cages used for?

Oct 15, 2025

Gabion cages are mechanically woven from galvanized steel wire. They are mainly used for erosion protection of rivers, dikes, and seawalls, as well as for use in reservoirs and river channel interception.

1. Controlling and guiding rivers and floods: The sturdy cages protect riverbanks and prevent water erosion and soil loss.

2. Protecting river channels, canals, and riverbeds: Gabion cages effectively protect riverbanks and riverbeds during river reconstruction and artificial channel excavation. They also control water flow and prevent water loss, particularly in ecological protection and water quality maintenance.

3. Bank and slope protection: Gabion cages play a protective role in rivers, lakes, and their slopes, fully utilizing the advantages of ecological gabion cages.

4. They can be used to reinforce riverbanks. Gabion cages used for reinforcing dikes are generally placed inside the dike, mainly used in areas with fast-flowing rivers. The river water washes over the gabion mesh rather than directly washing over the dike, reducing damage to the dike.
