What is a gabion cage?

Oct 17, 2025

Gabion cages are assembled from gabion mesh panels of various mesh sizes according to ASTM A975-97 standards. On-site filling with stones forms a flexible, permeable, and integrated retaining structure for ecological protection projects. The wire mesh is made of high-galvanized steel wire or 10% aluminum-zinc alloy steel wire. In harsh environments with severe pollution, the wire mesh can be coated with PVC to enhance its corrosion resistance.

The numerous pores between the stones within the gabion cages facilitate the drainage of pore water from the backfill soil, reducing pore water pressure in the soil, ensuring soil shear strength, and contributing to the stability of the entire structure. Simultaneously, it saves on the costs of drainage systems required for traditional retaining structures, lowering the overall construction cost. Furthermore, the pore water within the cages creates conditions for water flow, enabling natural water-soil exchange and facilitating natural vegetation growth. After a period of time, the structure and nature can truly achieve harmony.
